2006 (May) Site Visit to Safe Passage

We have long wanted to share Hanley Denning’s successful Safe Passage program (www.safepassage.org) in Guatemala with our grantees. Due to the challenge of coordinating all of our grantees' travel schedules for a journey to Antiqua, we invited Hanley to share her experiences at a luncheon at the Cumberland Club in Portland on May 23rd.

Hanley described how she first created a school for the children who scavenge the Guatemala City dump for their families’ livelihoods, and then purchased a small hotel in Antiqua so that these newly educated children and teens could learn employable skills in the hotel management education program she has designed.

It is an exciting and inspiring story, and all who attended and shared their ideas and perspectives with Hanley have asked for a follow-up luncheon in August to learn which ideas have been of help and if other needs can be addressed. The group is also trying to coordinate a trip to Antiqua where they can lend hands-on expertise to advance this program!
